Scholarships at The University of Manchester

The Discipline of Social Statistics and the Centre for Census and Survey Research at the University of Manchester offer an MSc programme in Social Research Methods and Statistics. The programme provides a firm grounding in advanced quantitative methods, taught within an applied social science framework. The programme is designed to be accessible to non-statisticians yet more focussed than most of the existing Masters courses in social research methods. The MSc course offers relevant and marketable skills for a career in research and is recognised for PhD training by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). Modules are taught with an emphasis on hands-on training in the application of methods and software. The programme is available full-time over one year or part-time over two years. Scholarships that will cover the fees of up to three excellent full time (Home/EU) students or of one excellent full time overseas student are currently available. In the case of exceptional applicants, in addition to the fees, and subject to funds being available, we will consider offering a bursary towards living expenses. The fees for full time Home/EU students are £3,500 and for full time overseas students £11,300. Both Home/EU and overseas students are eligible for these scholarships. The scholarships will be awarded on the basis of academic excellence and potential, which will be judged based on academic qualifications and performance and prior experience in social research methods and/or statistics.

The deadline for applications is Wednesday 31st March.
Everyone applying for a full time place in the MSc programme by March 31st 2010 will automatically be considered for these scholarships. Successful applicants will be notified by May 14. When applying, please submit with your application, a CV, an analytic transcript of your degree and two academic reference letters. Ever thought why mosquitoes are attarcted to human. Very simple. To feed on blood. But, human blood makes mosquitoes wild. This is really interesting secret. But it is no longer a mystery. Scientists have found why it is so. Yes, American scientists have identified that it is because of a kind of pheromone - nonanal. The only other organism to secret this substance are birds. But at least I have never seen mosquiotes feeding on birds, may be mosquiotoes can not reach birds.

Nevertheless, this discovery, will certainly lead in the long run effective programs in controlling deadly epidemic diseases like Malaria. The next logical step now is to understand the sensory mechanism in mosquitoes that is responsible for recognising the nonanal, with the help of technologies like Scanning Electron Microscopy.

In the contrary, medicines can be discovered targeting to reduce the level of nonanl secretion be human or diulte its concentration.

SHILLONG: The Pine City

Shillong, commonly known as the 'Scotland of the East' is very close to heart. You know since childhood I used to have the desire of staying at least for few days only in two places in the world. The first is Shillong in the north eastern part of India and the other is England. There are reasons behind my desire. The first one was due to its natural beauty and the second one is for its intellectual power.

Fortunately, I got an assignment to work in Shillong for few years. And I suggest, if you are a nature lover, a lover of cleanliness, you should visit Shillong and its adjoining areas at least once.

Some of the appealing attractions as I experienced them are:

The water falls in and around Cherrapunjee - the ex-wettest place in the world

The lush green surroundings across the state

Neat and clean and well-maintained roads

Must see cave interiors near Cherrapunjee

I have traveled almost across the state during my 5 years stay. Really, I just ca not express the feelings I used to have as and when I travelled around. From my personnel experiences, I can vouch that Shillong offers much more than what we see of foreign locations in hindi cinemas.

I am sure Shillong is beautiful place and Bollywood has yet to experience the values of Shillong.

ONE GLASS OF MILK

One day, a poor boy who was selling goods from door to door to pay his way through school, found he had only one thin dime left, and he was hungry.

He decided he would ask for a meal at the next house. However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door.

Instead of a meal he asked for a drink of water! . She thought he looked hungry so brought him a large glass of milk. He drank it so slowly, and then asked, How much do I owe you?"

You don't owe me anything," she replied. "Mother has taught us never to accept pay for a kindness."

He said ... "Then I thank you from my heart."

As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt stronger physically, but his faith in God and man was strong also. He had been ready to give up and quit.

Many year's later that same young woman became critically ill. The local doctors were baffled. They finally sent her to the big city, where they called in specialists to study her rare disease.

Dr. Howard Kelly was called in for the consultation. When he heard the name of the town she came from, a strange light filled his eyes.

Immediately he rose and went down the hall of the hospital to her room.

Dressed in his doctor's gown he went in to see her. He recognized her at once.

He went back to the consultation room determined to do his best to save her life. From that day he gave special attention to her case.

After a long struggle, the battle was won.

Dr. Kelly requested the business office to pass the final bill to him for approval. He looked at it, then wrote something on the edge and the bill was sent to her room. She feared to open it, for sh e was sure it would take the rest of her life to pay for it all. Finally she looked, and something caught her attention on the side of the bill. She read these words ...

It aims to provide an opportunity for well-qualified citizens of ADB's developing member countries to pursue postgraduate studies in economics, management, science and technology, and other development-related fields at participating academic institutions in the Asian and Pacific Region. The ADB-JSP provides

TWAS/BioVisionAlexandria.NXT

The TWAS/BioVisionAlexandria.NXT(BVA.NXT) initiative was launched in BioVisionAlexandria 2008, where the Bibliotheca Alexandrina hosted 99 young scientists from 27 developing countries to discuss the problems these scientists face when conducting research in their respective countries.

TWAS/BVA.NXT 2010 will be the second BioVisionAlexandira.NXT to be organized in Alexandria. It will revolve around one of the main concerns of every researcher in developing countries Publishing Scientific Papers in the Developing World. One hundred young researchers (below the age of 35 and holding a Masters or PhD) will be selected to participate in the event, of which 15% will be NXT alumni from both developed and developing countries to promote networking and to ensure the stability and continuity of the program.

The event will start on 10 April 2010, and will include various panels and roundtable discussions where the young scientists will be offered the opportunity to meet distinguished scientists, as well as editors and reviewers from several prestigious scientific journals with whom they will share their views regarding the obstacles they face when publishing their research, and explore ways in which they could overcome them. Moreover, each young researcher will demonstrate his/her project/research in the poster session. Furthermore, the young scientists will be invited to participate in the 5-day BioVisionAlexandria Conference program.

TWAS will contribute partially to the air tickets.

Priority will be given to applied research and research meeting society's needs.

Registration will be closed upon reaching 120 applicants.

The SLE (Centre for Advanced Training in Rural Development) launched - in addition to its postgraduate development cooperation programme, in 2005 also the short-term training programme SLEplus: Berlin Training for International Development Cooperation.

SLEplus: is designed to meet the needs of professionals working in the area of development cooperation in government and non-government organizations. It is financed by DAAD with funds from the Ministry of Economic Cooperation, the German Federal Foreign Office and the Berlin Senate.

SLEplus: is once again offering three short-term training courses at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin in the summer of 2010:

- Decentralized Management of Regional Development (9 – 20 August 2010)

- Management of Development Projects (23 August – 3 September 2010)

- Conflict Transformation and Peace Building (6 – 17 September 2010)

A framework programme provides participants with the opportunity to become familiar with scholarly discussions in the field of development cooperation and to meet representatives of the relevant German government and non-government organizations and institutions.

Course language: English

Scholarships will be available to qualified foreign alumni of German institutions of higher education and to alumni of universities who received a German sur-place-scholarship in their home country or a third country. A limited number of scholarships for the "Conflict Transformation and Peace Building" course can be offered as well to non-alumni.

In case of interest for other courses, there is a possibility for non-alumni to participate as self-payers or being funded by their (partner-) organisation. In this case, the fee per course (10 days) will be 500€.

Global Warming: What is real?

We have been living for quite some time with the belief that climate change is happening due to the emission of greenhouse gases from different sources. The globe is getting wormer day by day.

But there are some twists which has created a sort of confusion among the general people. For instance, emails stolen by hackers from leading climate change research centres accuse scietists of manipulating data and the phenomenon of climate change is being exagerrated.

Add to this irony,a picture story that appeared in the Times of India yesterday reports one Janardan Negi, a distinguished theoretical geophysicist from India claims that the globe is infact cooling in contrary to the common belief of the occurence of global worming.

Now, the question is which opinion to believe?

So, the debate over authenticity of climate change data specially the melting of the Himalayan glacier seems to have geared up.

Whatever may be the case with the data. But it is sure that something is wrong which is evident from the frequent occurrence of disasters. So, I feel, it is the responsibly all and one concerned to do their bit.

I will be posting in my views about the steps that needs to be taken to reduce the burden on earth, creating less pressure on it or at the most allowing the earth as much time as possible to replenish its resources.

Formalising Informal Innovations

I am currently working on approaches in formalising informal innovations. By informal innovations I mean Traditional Indigenous Knowledge (TIK). These are time tested and continuously refined to suit the requirements. I will welcome from all, any ideas and suggestions on the approaches to be followed for doing so.
